How to add meta descriptions

The description is the sales copy under your search result. Without it Google splices together a sentence from wherever it likes on the page, which is rarely the sentence that would make someone click.

What 13x checks

This is rule metadata.description-present in the public registry: Every page has a meta description. It runs on every audit, against the pages we actually fetched, and its result is derived from the response rather than estimated.

The fix

The same text the audit hands you when this check fails on your own site.

Add a meta description per page, 70–160 characters, written as the sentence that would make someone click:

html code
<meta name="description" content="Invoicing built for freelance designers. Send an invoice in under a minute and chase late payment automatically." />

It is not a ranking factor, but it is the only copy you control in a search result.

Framework-specific versions

Where the change differs enough to be worth writing out separately.
